Description:
This is an unusual locking ratchet wheel with a complex multi-lever pawl. The ratchet wheel is advanced one tooth pitch by a crank with three lever teeth to the right of the wheel. Protruding out of the plane of the wheel are twenty rectangular shaped teeth. These teeth are engaged by the split rectangular openings of the levered pawl. There are actually three separate pawl levers that are lifted by the rotating levers on the crank. One crank lever lifts one of the pawl levers to release the locking, the middle crank lever advances the wheel one tooth pitch and the third lever lifts the outer pawl lever and lowers it after the wheel advance to lock the wheel. This mechanism is similar to a lock design by Chubb.
