Application: Steam Engine. Named for Lord Cochrane who constructed one and two piston versions in 1831, its original inventor appears to have been one Trotter, in 1805. It has been repeatedly reinvented-Root, in America, had a three piston type introduced in 1863; Hick obtained a patent in England in 1843.
