Description:
The Redtenbacher models in the Kinematic Models Collection at the University of Karlsruhe Germany were created to teach mechanical engineers about the basic mechanisms of machine design. Ferdinand Redtenbacher (1809-1863) is considered one of the pioneers in the education of mechanical engineers in Germany. Amoung his students were Karl Benz, who created one of the first automobiles and Franz Reuleaux, who is considered the 'father of kinematics' and creator of a large collection of kinematic mechanisms, some of which are exhibited in KMODDL. It is now clear that many of the Reuleaux models in Berlin were based on the designs of his former professor in Karlsruhe. This is a compound mechanism that combines the slider-crank with a gear and two, toothed racks. As the wheel on the right rotates, it drives the linear slider attached to the gear wheel. The gear in turn is forced to roll on a fixed rack on the bottom and the resulting rotation of the gear drives the sliding upper rack at double the speed of the driver. Although the slider-crank mechanism can be found in many of Reuleaux's models (e.g. C02), his models that were reproduced by Gustav Voigt did not include this interesting mechanism model by Redtenbacher.
