Description:
This friction wheel mechanism transmits motion and torque across two wheels with parallel axes. It differs from Model W-1 in that the contact takes place in a single trapezoidal shaped groove. The groove is used to create a larger area of contact to transmit torque. This model was designed to be used with a pedestal and weights (Model W-7) with which one can measure the maximum load that the friction wheel can carry without slipping. Reuleaux called these mechanisms "force closed" because they require a compression force to transmit the friction force.
