Description:
This model illustrates the relative rotary motion of two bodies with a solid cylinder constrained by a hollow cylinder. It is the basis of all axle bearings. Reuleaux refered to surface kinematic constraints between two bodies as 'lower pairs' as illustrated in the 'A' series of Voigt models He also suggested that one of the earliest applications of a turning pair was in the 'fire drill', used to start fires and predating the wheel. Today there are millions of applications of the turning or revolute pair in machines from robots to automobiles.
