Model: N17 Continuous Running Ratchet of Lagarousse
In this mechanism, oscillating motion of the pawl support link will turn the ratchet wheel in intermittent increments as each of the two pawls engages the ratchet wheel. In this model the oscillating horizontal motion of the vertical pawl support is produced by a slider-crank mechanism behind the large wheel. The crank is on the small wheel to the right. Reuleaux writes in The Constructor that Thompson used a similar mechanism in a telegraph device. This model is designed with a pulley and string to lift a weight.
This model has elements of intermittent mechanisms of N-10, N-11 yet is able to support large forces as in the power escapements of N-25, N-26.
