Model: UK054 Extreme Gear Reduction by Two Series-connected Worm Gear Drives
The endless screw or worm drive gear pair transforms high speed rotary motion about one axis into slow speed motion about a perpendicular axis. In this model two worm drives are connected in series with two outcomes. First the speed reduction is in the ratio of N squared where N is the speed ratio of one worm drive. Second, the output rotary motion occurs about an axis parallel to the input motion axis. The endless screw is an old mechanism with roots in the Renaissance or earlier. For example, worm drives can be found in the Codex Madrid Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci. A model of a single worm drive can be seen in the Reuleaux-Voigt collection, Model C09.
