Model: W02 Friction Wheels with Parallel Axes
In this friction wheel mechanism, torque and motion are transmitted across a contact surface between two wheels. One of the wheels is made of softer rubber-like material. [In German: elastischer Belastung durch Gummiüberzug] In the Cornell Collection model however, the small rubber wheel is dried out and has cracks after 120 years.

Contact between softer materials such as rubber and steel or rubber and concrete usually results in a large footprint between the two bodies and higher allowable friction forces without slip. Clearly the automobile tire on a road surface is a wide application. In this case the road acts as a 'wheel' with infinite radius. Because the friction contact requires a normal contact force between the wheels, Reuleaux called these mechanisms "force closed mechanisms"
