Model: Q05 Thumb Shaped Gear Teeth Profiles
According to Reuleaux, this gear tooth design uses an involute curve on one face and an epicycloid shape on the other side to obtain an asymetrically shaped gear tooth. This had advantages for large force applicatiions where the motion was always in the same direction. Reuleaux refers to Willis. A similar discussion may be found in Willis' 1841 book.
This model has six teeth for the pinion.
